Landcommanderij Alden Biesen is a state cultural centre, conference and seminar centre, is part of the Ministry of Culture, Art & Heritage agency of the Flemish Government, and is based in a historic castle with a European mission (www.alden-biesen.be/en).
International Storytelling Festival
Alden Biesen runs the biggest international storytelling festival in Europe, unique and multilingual. The festival lasts 9 days (210 shows, 21.000 tickets). During the week the programme is oriented towards schools. For youngsters below 16 years the stories are in Dutch but from 16 years on one can choose between Dutch, English, French and German. In the evening we organize sessions for adults attending evening language classes. They can opt for French, German, English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Swedish and Dutch. Storytellers tell in their mother tongue, there is no translation at the festival.
Under the label of ‘Alden Biesen Storytelling Castle’ the Landcommanderij acts as a support centre for the art of storytelling in Flanders and Europe, with master classes, networking activities, support and links with education. In addition, the centre hosts the official seat of FEST: the European Federation for Storytelling.
The Alden Biesen European team is very active in international projects. A number of these projects deal with ‘applied storytelling’: Sheherazade, 1001 Stories for Adult Learning (www.sheherazade.eu) , TALES, Storytelling in the Classroom (www.storiesforlearning.eu), Story Regions (www.storyregions.se).
